Here’s one for you that I really wish will be solved one day. Thirteen years ago in my neighborhood, a seven year old boy was killed by a falling bullet on the Fourth of July. Some idiot went out with all the fireworks going off and shot a pistol in the air, and it came down on the poor kids head and killed him. I always wondered, “where were the witnesses”? You know that if people were partying and some drunk shoots his gun in the air that someone would put 2 and 2 together when the news broke. The obvious is that some loner went out and shot his pistol and when he discovered what happened, kept his mouth shut. But I will always wonder.

That’s interesting. Do you have a name for the kid so I can research it?

My heart just breaks for all the deceased and their loved ones. I had really thought we would get some forward momentum with Asha earlier in the year but things seem to have quieted down. I hope that just means they are gathering more information and not at a dead end. This was well-done and definitely introduced me to a couple cases I was unfamiliar with.

It’s very hard to not get emotionally invested in their stories. Which is why we have to take breaks from doing this. It is an emotional rollercoaster at time thinking that something is going to happen and it doesn’t. I have to really be detached from the outcome of any story I do even if I don’t want to be. For instance, Deanna Merryfield I love her family and we have many things in common. I love covering her story but with everything I do I have to remain committed to bringing attention to these cases and not get worked up over new developments and I have to remain detached so I am not a burden on the families.

Yeah it is very difficult to navigate these journeys of wanting to support the families and get information out there while also protecting our own mental health. Breaks are very important and yet seldom taken.
