I would add another factor for violence in the Southeast and South.
The cultivated sense of "honor brought low" in generations of Confederate descendants. The belief that they were the victims of a great injustice. It makes every slight intolerable.
Being a statistical person i have some comments. Looking at this map I see too much white to agree w the conclusions of the SE. I'd love to see actual numbers & the standard deviations of each area, there are so many differing sizes of circles, I see variation to be huge therefore conclusions could be questionable. This shows concentrated of populations have higher rate of violence, I agree but not because of this map.
There are many examples of data adjustments here which remind me of Karl Marx in Das Kapital and his adjustments to make his theories fit the desired result. Im not saying you are, just that it came to mind.
There are not any references to studies including parental situations, race, education levels, lack of emotion control which reasonably could be on a root causes list. Analysis is incomplete if not done honestly & objectively and these are touchy subjects for many yet very possibly significantly involved. What about the obtaining of illegal guns, no policy will control that & its possibly a significant factor.Maybe just not included here.
Culture of honor? Who gets most out of control when you hear the phrase "he dissed me"?
What about the great influx of illegals? I realize the use of census data lags conclusions, it does explain why an updated census is needed in states like CA, TX, FL, DC & others.
What does "weak institutional social control" mean?
What about illegal drug use? People lose emotional control when using some drugs and alcohol.
What exactly is "firearms availability permissive"? What is permissible different in the South & SE?
We have very high numbers of homicides in other places like St. Louis where at one time it was the homicide leader.
The big statement for me was comparing 54% rural southerners owning firearms vs 25% urban northerners and that's why there are more homicides in the south. Thats a totally out of line comparison and conclusion.
What is a "substantial fraction"? How much is that exactly?
I appreciate that the mapping tool was used to look for serial killers, I am wondering how that turned out. "SE a ddisproportional share of confirmed and suspected serial killers in FL, TX, GA, CA. 2 of 4 are not considered south as being defined here SE. (TX).
Future analysis should be deeper and wider w specific goals & statistical tools intended for this purpose.
This is an extremely complex situation that should get more resources. We could even pay for it if we could eliminate our fraud and corruption wasting our money.
I hope you appreciate the feedback, I will be looking for more to read from you.

The Bible Belt is a dangerous place
SE? The East Coast NY TO ATL is obvious focus. Not reading any further due to perceiving the bias to SE.
If you read the rest, you’ll find your criticism thoroughly addressed.
I cannot find this to read it all. Can you pls tell me where to look? thx

So blacks are killing, but it’s the plantations fault. Got it.

Um, gun Bible churches and “until death do you part” might be contributing factors.
