Missing since February 3, 2019
Rapid City / Rockerville, South Dakota
Serenity June Dennard was only 9 years old when she vanished from the Black Hills Children’s Home, a residential treatment facility near Rockerville, South Dakota.
On the morning of February 3, 2019, Serenity was reportedly playing inside the gym with other children when she suddenly ran outside into the cold winter weather. Witnesses reported seeing her leave the facility area, but despite an extensive search involving law enforcement, search teams, volunteers, K-9 units, and the FBI, Serenity has never been found.
Her disappearance remains one of South Dakota’s most heartbreaking unsolved missing child cases.
Over the years, investigators have reviewed hundreds of leads, interviewed or contacted hundreds of people, searched the children’s home property and surrounding areas multiple times, and executed search warrants. Physical searches were eventually suspended absent new information, but Serenity’s case remains open.
There are several theories surrounding Serenity’s disappearance, including that she became lost in the rugged Black Hills terrain and succumbed to the elements, that she was picked up by someone after leaving the property, or that someone may know more than they have shared. At this time, no theory has been publicly confirmed, and no one has been charged.
What is known is this: Serenity was a child. She mattered. She still matters. Her family continues to wait for answers, and someone may still hold the missing piece that can bring resolution.
Serenity would now be 17 years old. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children continues to list her as missing, and her case remains active.
