On June 15, 2021, five-year-old Summer Moon-Utah Wells disappeared from her family’s home on Ben Hill Road in the Beech Creek community of Hawkins County, Tennessee. More than five years later, despite one of the largest missing child investigations in Tennessee history, Summer has never been found.
The known facts:
• Summer was reported missing during the evening of June 15, 2021.
• She was last believed to have been at her family’s rural property after spending part of the day with her mother and grandmother.
• She was described as approximately 3 feet tall, 40 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She was reportedly wearing a pink shirt with gray shorts or pants and may have been barefoot.
• The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), the FBI, the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office, and dozens of other agencies launched an extensive search involving hundreds of personnel, specialized search teams, K-9 units, aviation assets, and thousands of investigative hours.
Where the investigation stands today:
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
Authorities have:
Reviewed thousands of tips.
Conducted numerous interviews.
Executed search warrants.
Analyzed digital evidence and cell phone data.
Repeatedly searched areas surrounding Summer’s home.
Continued to investigate every credible lead received.
Importantly, investigators have not publicly identified any suspect, no arrests have been made, and no one has been charged in connection with Summer’s disappearance.
One detail that continues to receive attention is a red or maroon 1998–2000 Toyota Tacoma with a full-bed ladder rack and white buckets that may have been in the area around the time Summer disappeared. Investigators have never confirmed the truck’s involvement but have continued to seek information about it.
Perhaps one of the most misunderstood aspects of this case is the issue of abduction. While Summer’s family has publicly expressed the belief that she was kidnapped, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has repeatedly stated there is currently no evidence confirming an abduction occurred. At the same time, investigators have not ruled out any possibility, including foul play, an accident, or another scenario.
In late 2025, investigators followed up on a new lead approximately 10 miles from Summer’s home. Authorities have not disclosed what prompted the search or whether any evidence was recovered, reinforcing that the investigation remains active.
This case serves as a reminder that facts—not rumors—are what move investigations forward. Over the years, countless theories have circulated online, but speculation can easily overshadow credible information and create additional challenges for investigators.
Someone may remember a vehicle, a conversation, a visitor, or something that seemed insignificant at the time. Even the smallest detail could help investigators piece together what happened to Summer.
