BREAKING: Hollywood Icon Rob Reiner and Wife Michele Found Dead in Brentwood Home; LAPD Opens Homicide Investigation
Los Angeles—Los Angeles Police Department homicide detectives have launched an investigation after legendary director-actor Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife of 36 years, producer-photographer Michele Singer Reiner, were discovered dead inside their Brentwood residence Sunday afternoon.
Officers responded to a 3:40 p.m. “death investigation” call at the couple’s two-story home on North Chadbourne Avenue. Inside, patrol units located two unresponsive adults. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, according to LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton. While police have not officially released the names of the deceased, a family spokesperson confirmed to CNN that the Reiners “passed away tragically” and asked for privacy “during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Detectives are treating the case as an apparent homicide. Hamilton told reporters late Sunday that investigators are “not looking for anyone as a suspect or in any other manner at this time,” but emphasized the probe is in its earliest stages. A search warrant has been requested to allow forensic teams to process the interior and exterior of the property. Detectives were interviewing a family member Sunday evening; no one has been detained.
The Reiners’ bodies were discovered by a relative who had come to check on the couple, a law-enforcement source said. Neighbors reported nothing unusual until patrol cars and yellow crime-scene tape suddenly appeared. “It’s always been a quiet street,” one resident told CNN. “Tonight everyone is shaken.”
Rob Reiner’s filmography spans five decades and includes This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and A Few Good Men. Michele Singer Reiner produced several of her husband’s later projects and was nominated for a 2024 Emmy for the documentary Albert Brooks: Defending My Life. The pair met on the set of When Harry Met Sally (1989) and married the same year, eventually collaborating on films such as Shock and Awe and this September’s Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.
Tributes poured in within hours. Former President Barack Obama called the Reiners’ deaths “heartbreaking,” while actors Cary Elwes, Kathy Bates, and John Cusack posted memories of working with the director. The Screen Actors Guild hailed Reiner as “a genre-defining filmmaker and six-decade union member.”
LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division will handle the follow-up investigation. Anyone with information relevant to Sunday’s events is urged to contact (877) LAPD-247.
