Questions answered in this file

What is CODIS?

CODIS is the FBI-supported DNA database network that lets laboratories compare profiles from offenders, crime scenes, unidentified remains and relatives.

Why would a cold case DNA profile never match?

The person may not be in any searched index, or the profile may be partial and not meet the requirements for searching.

Does a CODIS hit prove someone is guilty?

No. A hit is an investigative lead that must be confirmed and explained, since DNA can be transferred innocently.

What can be done if CODIS finds no match?

Agencies may consider retesting for a fuller profile or forensic genetic genealogy, under applicable policies and with confirmatory testing.

How can relatives of a missing person help DNA comparisons?

Relatives can ask the investigating agency or NamUs about giving a reference sample, which can be compared with unidentified remains.
