Questions answered in this file

What is forensic facial reconstruction?

It estimates a person's face from their skull using anatomy and tissue depth data, to help the public recognise unidentified remains.

Can a reconstruction identify someone?

No. It may prompt recognition, but identity must be confirmed through DNA, dental records, fingerprints or other scientific methods.

Which features are uncertain in a reconstruction?

Hair, eye colour, skin tone, weight, nose tip, lips and ears are not determined by bone and carry considerable uncertainty.

Why do agencies release several versions?

To reflect uncertainty in features like hairstyle and weight, increasing the chance someone recognises the person's general appearance.

What should I do if a reconstruction resembles my missing relative?

Contact the agency named in the release with your relative's details, and ensure they are entered in NamUs.
